Reading & Writing

High-quality literacy instruction helps children access information that interests them, communicate with the wider world, become informed citizens, and reach their full potential. Education Northwest helps schools work across grade levels and content areas as they build independent readers and writers who have strong foundational skills and who can engage in deep thinking, reasoning, and writing about complex texts. We help educators choose and apply strategies, interventions, and assessments more effectively through our customized professional development and evaluation services.

Services

Literacy Coaching

We provide coaching for district and school leaders on how to improve literacy programs in low-performing, high-poverty schools. We work alongside instructional coaches to develop strong school leaders who apply evidence-based literacy and coaching expertise to strengthen their own school programs. Our evidence-based Success Now approach guides leaders in making strong, sustainable literacy decisions.

Professional Development

Education Northwest partners with educators to find solutions to their unique literacy needs. Whether focusing on phonics, metacognition, use of evidence, or other literacy-related concerns, we collaborate with our clients to identify the content, support strategies, and delivery methods that best meet their needs.

Program Design

Educators must consider many variables as they design evidence-based literacy programs. We offer guidance and expertise to help literacy leaders conduct structured reading and writing observations, train staff members in effective intervention strategies and grouping, create multi-tiered systems of support, and use data to engage in self-inquiry and improvement.

Struggling Readers Consulation

Education Northwest offers literacy expertise across the spectrum, from early literacy to postsecondary and from English learners to special education students and children with dyslexia. We offer training and technical assistance that is specifically designed for educators and educational leaders who work with students for whom literacy does not come easily.

Program Evaluation

Education Northwest provides data and analysis to help our clients assess their literacy efforts. We also work closely with local, state, and federal leaders to create customized evaluations in areas ranging from early literacy to adolescent reading. In addition, we have deep experience with literacy research and have served literacy policy consultants to both lawmakers and school leaders.

The 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Instruction

The 6+1 Trait Writing Model helps educators provide clear, consistent, and evidence-based feedback on student writing. Many schools and districts are beginning to emphasize students’ writing skills across the curriculum. This makes it even more essential that all staff members use a common terminology and common strategies to provide feedback. Learn more...

Resources

The Northwest Literacy Cooperative

To solve a challenge faced by many small, rural districts where resources are often scarce, Education Northwest is launching the Northwest Literacy Cooperative. The Co-op will leverage partnerships across multiple school districts to share and reduce the costs of accessing high-quality professional develop and consulting for language and literacy teachers, instructional coaches, and school administrators who are passionate about improving literacy outcomes. Look for the more to come in a region near you!

Perhaps the biggest accomplishment of the process was the buy-in from all of our teachers. In addition to analyzing each grade, Marybeth had us discuss vertical alignment. Because the process went so well, we’ve asked her to support our elementary school as we implement our new program this year.
