Senior Advisor – Data and Evidence Use

Description

Education Northwest improves educational results for children, youth, and adults by providing research and development assistance in delivering equitable, high-quality educational programs. Education Northwest is a private, nonprofit corporation which has served the Northwest region since 1966 as its Regional Educational Laboratory under contract with the U. S. Department of Education, as well as other federal, state, and local agencies and organizations.

This position provides technical assistance to educators in the analysis, display and use of educational data and research evidence for the purposes of guiding decision-making and improvement at different levels of the educational system. This position is housed in Portland, Oregon; successful candidates must reside in greater Portland area or be willing to relocate.

Duties

  • Provide technical assistance at the school, district and state level on the effective use of data and evidence for guiding educational decision-making and improvement
  • Design practical tools such as data displays, summaries and indicator reports for decision-making in a variety of settings
  • Build the capacity of educators and policy makers to pose actionable questions and assimilate and apply educational research and data analysis in their local settings
  • Support organizational and client efforts to achieve equitable educational systems and outcomes for students
  • Develop of proposals, design and implement contract activities, develop products, and provide client services to improve outcomes for students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Professional Qualifications

Education/Training: Masters in education or related field required.

Experience/Qualification Requirements: The successful applicant should have all of the following skills, knowledge, and abilities

  • Two years experience in the areas of evidence use and data-driven decision-making, required.
  • Two years experience translating complex research findings and results into usable reports, visually appealing displays, summaries and tools that can be easily accessed and used by educators and policy makers for decision-making at the classroom, school, district, and/or state level, required.
  • Willingness and capability to work as a team player

Client Services:

  • Two years successful experience working with clients to use research evidence and data to inform policy and practice, required.
  • Two years experience working with clients to increase their capacity to collect data, use existing data sources, develop data tools and templates, and effectively use data in planning and improvement, required.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience

  • Knowledge of current research and practice in one of three core areas:
    1. achieving greater equity and special populations, including English Language learners, Native education, poverty, and racial minorities;
    2. turning around low-performing schools, school improvement, including literacy, math, and/or science; and
    3. increasing graduation rates and readiness for postsecondary education and careers, including common core standards implementation
  • Knowledge of emerging national policy and practice regarding the use of longitudinal data by states and districts
  • Knowledge of and experience with educational assessment, including formative and interim assessment, state assessment and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
  • Experience working with state and district data systems
  • Five years experience producing high-quality written reports
  • Excellent small and large group facilitation and communication skills
  • Successful classroom and/or school district administration experience

Physical Demands/Conditions:

  • Position is based in Portland, Oregon. Successful candidates must reside in greater Portland area or be willing to relocate.
  • Sit for prolonged periods of time, finger dexterity for the operation of a personal computer, operate a telephone, frequent interruptions to concentration, periodic extended or late work hours, and interaction with a wide range of clients and co-workers.
  • Including overnight stays out of state (2-3 times per year anticipated)
  • Ability to travel by car or common carrier for out of state and rural travel

Compensation

Salary range: $53,303 - $91,287 per year based on experience, plus a benefits package that includes vacation, generous employer paid retirement, medical, dental, life insurance, transportation benefit, and opportunities for ongoing professional development.
