Today's students differ greatly from most of their teachers--linguistically, culturally, and economically. The author, in demonstrating a mismatch between today's students, teachers, and management practices, proposes a research-based approach to classroom management that considers the needs of students first. This developmentally based approach considers students as whole people with responsibilities and rights as members of classroom communities.
