The latest installment in the Wee Can series provides another practical resource for teaching grades K–4 students the 6+1 Traits of effective writing—this time by using nonfiction books.
Wee Can Write II is organized around 36 award-winning titles that are easily found in the classroom, school library, or public library. Titles are categorized into areas within the Dewey Decimal Classification System: The Arts, Biography, Language Arts, Science and Math, and Social Studies.
What the authors say:
Wee Can Write II has been designed by teachers for teachers who value, encourage, and rejoice in writing with young writers. This project was created out of our desire to continue the writing resources for teaching the 6+1 Traits across the curriculum. In the tradition of other Wee Can products, these activities need a very small amount of preparation. We are confident that our new book will give teachers and students a whole new perspective as they use nonfiction literature to apply the 6+1 Traits of writing.
Lessons are provided for each book title based on the six original traits—ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Also included are activities that encourage and support the introduction of presentation—the unique “+1” trait of the Education Northwest 6+1 Trait Writing model.
