6+1 Trait® Writing Institute for Trait Presenters

Cannon Beach, Oregon
Tuesday, June 26, 2012 - Thursday, June 28, 2012
Students

This advanced institute is for trait-experienced literacy coaches, teacher leaders, administrators, and curriculum coordinators wishing to conduct their own in-district, 6+1 Trait trainings. Participants should have already taken a 6+1 Trait Writing workshop and have used the 6+1 Trait Writing model in the classroom.

This three-day training is designed to help educators:

  • Understand adult learning and take home strategies that fit into professional development trait workshops
  • Examine research supporting 6+1 Trait Writing and writing instruction in general
  • Review the writing traits and best classroom practices
  • Discuss and explore trait lesson design
  • Review a plan to provide traits information to families and community members
  • Create and/or design a 6+1 Trait Writing nonprofit workshop(s) for colleagues and schools within their own districts

The 6+1 Trait Writing Institute for Trait Presenters explores:

  • CONTENT: Day one activities include a review of the 6+1 Trait Writing model and related classroom instructional practices.
  • CONNECTIONS: Day two looks at writing in the teaching-learning cycle, and how the cycle relates to balanced literacy. Student goal setting, family support, and lesson planning are explored.
  • COMMUNICATION: Day three focuses on designing trait workshops of varying duration and purpose.

An adult-learning strand is modeled, discussed, and showcased throughout the three-day institute, along with time provided daily for planning individual workshops.

Facilitator

Janice Littlebear

Jan Littlebear, a senior program advisor at Education Northwest, provides training in the 6+1 Trait Writing model. She also assists with research in teaching and assessing writing. Littlebear relies on research-supported best practices and on 18 years of experience using the 6+1 Trait model in both elementary and secondary classrooms, as well as tutoring students and mentoring teachers. She has a master's degree in education with a focus on language and literacy, as well as a National Board Certification in early adolescence English and language arts.

In her workshops, Littlebear uses humor, interactive strategies, and hands-on activities to involve everyone in the learning process. Participants often remark how reenergized and excited they are to return to their classrooms and apply what they have learned.
