James Monroe High School: Smaller Learning Communities Design Studio (North Hills, CA)

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - Friday, April 23, 2010

Teams visiting Monroe the Design Studio at Monroe High School, a large urban high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District will experience effective integrated teaching and learning in a Smaller Learning Community program. The focus of the SLC is interdisciplinary, thematic instruction aligned with Career and Technical Education standards. Teams will also observe evidence of how Monroe High School has promoted equity among the student body by effectively integrating significant numbers of Special Education and English Language Learner students into the SLC structures.

Our school is divided wall-to-wall (whole school) into six small learning communities focused on career and technical education. They are: the Ninth Grade Academy 1; Ninth Grade Academy 2; Public Service/Fire Academy; Public Service/Law & Government & Police Academy; Arts, Media & Entertainment/Film Academy; Engineering & Design/Robotics Academy.

Visiting teams will learn how we have changed both instruction and structure through our SLC redesign process. Academy teachers work collaboratively to increase academic rigor by developing standards-based, interdisciplinary, thematic, writing-based curriculum for each of the seven academies. They will also learn how the SLCs deliver authentic project-based curriculum while differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students. Visiting teams will also review examples of writing and project-based rubrics designed by the academies to benchmark progress. Visitors will also realize how the Monroe High School community sees itself as constantly "under construction," with continuous improvement, reflecting on our successes and challenges.
