6+1 Trait® Writing Across Content Areas Institute (Portland, OR)

Thursday, March 11, 2010 - Friday, March 12, 2010

Education Northwest’s 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Assessment & Instruction is a powerful framework designed to help all teachers and students use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing as well as to create a common vision of what good writing looks like.

This two-day workshop has been created specifically for middle and high school teams of three or four: three-person teams would include a science, a math and a social studies teacher; if four people attend, we suggest that either an administrator or a language arts teacher join the other three. The theme for this writing-to-learn workshop is using the 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Assessment & Instruction to improve writing in the content areas.

Day 1 will demonstrate ways to introduce the Traits to students using quick writes and other short assignments.
Day 2 will use the 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Assessment & Instruction to improve and assess writing in all content areas.

Outcomes

Team participants of this institute will:

  • Identify and be able to use the 6+1 Traits to create a common language and to set clear goals for writing in their content areas
  • Learn to incorporate writing-to-learn activities across the curriculum
  • Gain strategies to enhance student thinking and learning through writing in the content areas
  • Design activities, strategies, lessons and methods for integrating more student writing in the classrooms
  • Use the writing process with 6+1 Traits to improve and assess longer, more formal writing assignments

College Credit

Participants may now earn one credit from Portland State University for completing this two-day institute. The cost is $55 per credit hour and payment is due at the institute.

Institute Facilitator

Roberta Young

Roberta Young from Houston was an educator in Texas for 31 years, serving as a secondary English teacher and a district-level administrator. Roberta designed this team model and training for content teachers and implemented it at the high school where she taught; the model earned recognition for that school from ASCD.

Roberta has been instrumental in putting together our content area workshops and has graciously agreed to present this first institute. During her teaching career she was named Teacher of the Year for her school and district and Texas Language Arts Teacher of the Year. Since her retirement, she has served as a national Apple Consulting Educator, the Greater Houston Area regional director for The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program, presenter for Education Northwest 6+1 Trait® Writing, supervisor of teacher candidates at the University of Houston, and an independent consultant.
