6+1 Trait® Writing Institute for Presenters (Cannon Beach, OR)

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 - Thursday, June 17, 2010

Surfsand Resort - Cannon Beach, Oregon

This advanced institute for future presenters is designed for literacy coaches, teacher leaders, administrators, and curriculum coordinators wishing to conduct their own in-district trait-based workshops.

Participants will:

  • Understand adult learning strategies and how to incorporate them into professional development workshops
  • Examine research supporting the 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment
  • Review the writing traits and instructional strategies
  • Explore curriculum mapping and lesson design
  • Develop a plan to provide traits information to families and community members
  • Design a trait writing workshop for colleagues and schools within your district

The 6+1 Trait Writing Institute for Presenters explores:

  • CONTENT: Day One activities include a review of the 6+1 Trait Writing Model and related instructional strategies.
  • CONNECTIONS: Day Two looks at writing in the teaching-learning cycle, and how the cycle relates to balanced literacy. Student goal setting, family support, and lesson planning will be explored.
  • COMMUNICATION: Day Three focuses on designing trait workshops of varying duration and purpose. It will include time to begin planning your own presentation.

An adult learning strand will be modeled, discussed, and showcased throughout the three-day institute.

Facilitator

Jan Littlebear, a Senior Program Advisor at Education Northwest, provides training in the 6+1 Trait Writing Model across the country. She also assists with research in teaching and assessing writing. Jan relies on research-supported best practices, and builds on 18 years of teaching elementary and secondary students using the 6+1 Trait model, tutoring students, and mentoring teachers. Jan has an M.S. in education with a focus on language and literacy, as well as a National Board Certification in Early Adolescence English and Language Arts.

In her workshops, Jan involves everyone in gaining the content through humor, interactive strategies, and hands-on activities. Participants often remark on how re-energized and excited they are to return to their classrooms and apply what they learned.
