Designed by practitioners for practitioners, this institute provides teachers, administrators, and district staff with state-of-the-art tools and strategies that have successfully transformed high school practice.

Building on the success of four previous institutes, this two-day program features:

  • Information and support that school and district teams need to troubleshoot and enhance their plans for improvement
  • 90-minute presentations by practitioners with "in-the-trenches" experience in transforming high schools
  • Tools and materials for improving classroom practices, differentiating instruction, teaming, aligning core and Career and Technical Education, expanding leadership, and supporting students for all postsecondary options
  • Motivational keynote sessions, networking luncheons, and exhibits showcasing effective resources available to schools and districts

CEUs & Graduate Credit

Two continuing education units (CEUs) or graduate credits will be available through Portland State University’s Continuing Education Graduate School of Education (CEED) for an additional fee of $110 ($55 per credit). Visit the CEED website for additional information about the credits.

Founding Principles

The institute planning committee and partners believe in offering high school education in all types of learning communities so that students are well known and supported and learning is linked to real-world experience. This institute is founded on the principles of equity in students' access to meaningful instruction and high expectations, fairness and justice in the allocation of resources, and cultural responsiveness in instruction and policies.


From Structure to Instruction is hosted by the Recreating Secondary Schools (RSS) Program of Education Northwest, which has a long track record of collaborating with high schools around the country to create more personalized learning communities.
