The 46th annual National Indian Education Association (NIEA) Convention and Trade Show is taking place in Portland on October 14–16. NIEA is the premiere professional development and research organization in the country dedicated to Native education.

“Having the NIEA conference in our own backyard gives us an opportunity to talk to and learn from other people in our region and to blend that with a national perspective,” says Education Northwest’s Phyllis Ault. “It’s an event we’ve been looking forward to for a long time.”

We’re looking forward to learning more about the current issues in Native education—the exciting pockets of success, the good things that are going on, and ways we can celebrate, expand, and share them. —Phyllis Ault

At the conference, Education Northwest will launch the Steven R. Nelson Native Educator Scholarship Program, which is designed to increase the number of Alaska Native, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students who pursue graduate degrees leading to careers in education policy, leadership, technical assistance, and/or research in the Pacific Northwest. Education Northwest and other Regional Educational Laboratories will host a forum on culture-based education, This forum highlights our collective work on issues addressing needs associated with Native education throughout the United States. “The forum builds on our long history of conducting research into culture-based education,” says Ault, who leads the Northwest Tribal Educators Alliance through REL Northwest. “We’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with many of the leaders in that field for the past 15 years. I’m super proud that we can continue the tradition of gathering leaders, researchers, and practitioners in culture-based education to learn from each other and collaborate.”

Education Northwest and REL Northwest presenters will also be cohosting sessions on Native approaches to collective impact and using culturally relevant research to guide practice.
