To better meet the needs of a growing audience of teacher practitioners and education leaders in our region and beyond, Education Northwest has rebooted its website with several new features and added a companion site for its REL Northwest work.
Making its first appearance on the organizational site is the Northwest Matters blog, which will feature a variety of writers discussing ideas and innovations from a Northwest perspective but with national reach. According to Communications and Information Technology Director Olga Vargas, “The blog reflects the needs and thoughts of our communities and creates a forum to engage in actionable conversation.” Education Northwest CEO Steve Fleischman wrote the first entry.
In addition to enhanced search functions, social media integration, and features that improve the experience of visitors using screen readers and other assistive web technologies, the new sites reflect Education Northwest’s commitment to equity by using responsive design.
Responsive design allows the sites to function on a number of different technologies, including mobile devices. According to the Pew Research Center, 25 percent of Americans access the Internet only through mobile devices, and minority populations are more likely to be mobile only.
When we started the redesign, the first item on our to-do list was to make sure the site worked on all devices. The number of people accessing our website using mobile devices has doubled every year since 2010, so for us, the decision was obvious.
