School Turnaround Event Takes Place March 24 in Helena

Turning Around Chronically Low-Performing Schools

Elementary and secondary school principals in Montana are invited to attend a March 24 forum that will examine evidence-based practices for turning around low-performing schools. School Turnarounds: A Research Forum for Montana Leaders is free and lunch will be provided to those who register by March 17. The daylong event will take place at Helena’s Great Northern Hotel following the MASS spring conference.

The forum is designed especially for leaders of Montana’s elementary and secondary schools facing improvement status but all principals interested in school improvement are welcome. Sponsored by Education Northwest and the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the event is predicated on the IES practice guide Turning Around Chronically Low-Performing Schools.

Co-author of the guide Dr. Sam Redding will lead a discussion about its major recommendations for school turnaround, and then moderate a panel of Montana principals who will discuss their improvement strategies and how they are overcoming obstacles as they try to move out of improvement status. Small-group discussions will offer participants the opportunity to get individualized assistance on issues facing their schools.
