Education Northwest Projects

Education Northwest's work is organized under broad projects and programs. Each one encompasses specific services, resources, and products, along with contact information.

6+1 Trait Writing

The 6+1 Trait® Writing framework is a powerful way to learn and use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing as well as create a common vision of what 'good' writing looks like. Teachers and students can use the 6+1 Trait model to pinpoint areas of strength and weakness as they continue to focus on improved writing.

Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are learning expectations for K–12 students in English language arts and mathematics. While most states have standards in these areas, the CCSS represent common expectations for students across the United States. State adoption of the standards is voluntary. Currently states in the Northwest Region and around the country are examining the CCSS to see how they align with existing state standards.

Education Northwest Magazine

Education Northwest Magazine is published three times a year by the Education Northwest. Education Northwest Magazine aims to promote a regional dialogue and to elevate teaching and learning by giving readers the best information, ideas, and personal stories from practitioners, researchers, and other experts.

Region X Equity Assistance Center

The Region X Equity Assistance Center at Education Northwest serves the Northwest and Pacific regions by providing information, training, and technical assistance so that all students are treated equitably, regardless of race, gender, or national origin.

Improving School Systems Program

The Improving School Systems Program focuses on supporting low-performing schools. Working with schools, districts, ESDs, and state departments of education, we offer customized coaching, consulting, and professional development to help schools implement and sustain systemic improvements.

National Mentoring Center

The National Mentoring Center at Education Northwest is one of the nation's premier training and technical assistance providers for youth mentoring programs and initiatives. Education Northwest has over 20 years experience providing training, resources, and other services to local mentoring programs and federal, state, and regional agencies.

Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center

The Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center housed at Education Northwest is federally funded to assist state departments of education in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming in the implementation of NCLB legislation. The Center specifically works on the issues of statewide systems of support for low-performing schools and districts, Response to Intervention services, accommodations for English language learner students, and promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) opportunities.

Oregon Leadership Network (OLN)

Organized in 2000, the OLN started as a demonstration project comprising eight school districts. Today, OLN has 10 member districts that educate nearly 30 percent of Oregon’s student population and serve approximately one third of the state’s teachers and administrators.

Oregon Parental Information and Resource Center

The Oregon Parental Information and Resource Center strengthens partnerships between families and schools. We offer online and face-to-face trainings and Web resources in Spanish and English to help parents understand their rights under NCLB. We also support families so that their young children are ready to enter school.

Recreating Secondary Schools Program

Recreating Secondary Schools (RSS) is one of the nation's foremost providers of training and coaching to schools and districts seeking to develop rigorous and relevant high school programs including small schools and smaller learning communities (SLCs).

REL Northwest

REL Northwest is one of 10 federally funded regional educational laboratories that works to link educators to scientifically based research. As part of this mission, we conduct regional needs assessments to determine what the top issues and trends are in the Northwest. This information then guides our research and technical assistance efforts. Recent research focuses on topics such as Response to Intervention, Supplemental Educational Services, and achievement of American Indian and Alaska Native students.

Volunteer Leadership Center

The Volunteer Leadership Center at Education Northwest works to build the capacity of national and regional volunteer programs, including AmeriCorps, VISTA, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America. We train new national service volunteers and share best practices with program directors and supervisors so that they can better meet critical community needs.
