A Closer Look at the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

An Orientation Module

A "Closer Look at the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics" is an introductory module that will assist teachers, administrators, and leaders of kindergarten through high school in building an understanding of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics. The materials include facilitator notes, slideshows, and handouts. The activities in each session are designed to support teams in working together to explore various aspects of the standards.

Exploring the Critical Areas in Grades K–8
K-8 Session 1
Participants examine the critical areas for their grade level of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics.

Understanding Cluster Organization
K-8 Session 2
Participants build on the ideas explored in Session 1: Exploring the Critical Areas, by examining the “cluster headings” and aligning them with the critical areas for each grade level of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics.

Exploring the Domains in Grades K–8
K-8 Session 3
Participants examine how the content progresses across the grades within a domain.

Exploring the Critical Areas
HS Session 1
Participants examine an overview of the structure of the Common Core standards for high school and the critical areas for one or more high school courses from the Pathways document of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics.

Matching Clusters of Standards to Critical Areas in one High School Course
HS Session 2
Participants examine sample pages from Appendix A: Designing High School Mathematics Courses based on the Common Core State Standards, the recommended cluster headings from one high school course and how these cluster headings align to the critical areas identified for the course.

Exploring Standard Progressions Across High School Courses
HS Session 3
Participants engage in activities to articulate standard progressions across three-plus years of high school instruction.

Exploring the Standards for Mathematical Practice K–High School
K–12 Session 4
Participants explore the standards for mathematical practice, highlight key ideas for each practice and view video clips to discuss evidence of students exhibiting the practice.
