6+1 Trait® Writing One-Day Overview Workshop for Teachers: A Taste of the Traits

Education Northwest’s 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment provides a common language teachers and students can use to communicate about the characteristics of quality writing and establishes a clear vision of what good writing looks like.

During this workshop, participants will receive an overview of the model and a framework for creating their own traits-based classroom.

Participants

This workshop is designed for K–12 teachers and other educators who want to know how a traits-based classroom functions and how to help students use the rubrics to improve their writing. This workshop offers a glimpse into the trait world, and does not go in depth about each specific trait; instead, we present an overview of the trait-writing model of instruction.

Activities

  • Learn the history of this writing assessment model of instruction—designed by teachers for teachers
  • Practice scoring student work samples using clearly defined rubrics to evaluate quality writing across “6+1” dimensions of performance: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation
  • Review the components of a traits-based classroom
  • Learn to provide students with effective feedback on the use of the model
