6+1 Trait® Wee Writers Across Content Workshop

photo of a student

This workshop introduces teachers of the youngest students to Education Northwest’s 6+1 Trait Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment using classic literature children know and love.

Following the popular guidebooks Wee Can™ Write and Wee Can™ Count, participants will explore a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities that will enrich students’ writing experiences across the curriculum content areas. By learning the trait language—a common vocabulary students, teachers, and parents can use—teachers can give beginning writers a solid foundation for writing throughout the school day and through their school lives.

Participants

This workshop can be customized to meet the needs of educators serving pre-K through second-grade students, special education teachers, Title I and support staff members, instructional aides, curriculum specialists, librarians, and administrators.

Benefits

Participants will:

  • Learn a trait-based approach to teach and assess writing using clear, concise, visual rubrics that allow the young writer to evaluate and assess his or her own writing
  • Strengthen their writing program as they explore activities that seamlessly integrate the traits into daily writing experiences
  • Experiment with a range of practical and creative activities connected to each of the writing traits
  • Discover how adaptable these activities are—they can be modified to use with other familiar and favorite children’s literature titles already on classroom bookshelves
