Recreating Secondary Schools: Rigorous and Coherent Instructional Programs

Would you like to see more interdisciplinary collaboration, but schedules, groupings, and standards seem to limit you? In this training, your leadership team collaboratively defines a standards-based program that can overcome obstacles to interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

Staff creates instructional program coherence by adopting a set of interrelated strategies for curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

As a training participant you will work with your leadership team to:

  • Refine a distinctive learning community vision that reflects students’ interests and learning needs
  • Define student proficiencies that encompass what graduates will know and be able to do across subject areas
  • Outline demonstrations of mastery of these proficiencies
  • Outline a common framework for curriculum, instruction, assessment, and learning climate to link class to class and year to year

Outcomes:

  • A set of standards-based interdisciplinary proficiencies (power standards) common to all subjects
  • Common strategies for curriculum, instruction, and assessment to support student proficiency
  • A professional learning plan to support teams in aligning instruction with proficiencies
