This bibliography reviews literature and practices related to grading student work. It includes 50 papers about grading and reporting issues, sample innovative report cards, training materials on grading and reporting, and first-person narratives from educators who have tried to reform the way they grade students.

The assessment of oral communication —speaking and listening—has traditionally lagged behind other subject areas because performances do not result in tangible, written products that can be taken away and assessed later. This bibliography provides 42 entries, including descriptions of assessment instruments and related articles intended to provide suggestions and spark ideas.

In an effort to better assess student outcomes, such as higher-order thinking skills, creativity, and problem solving, many schools are adopting performance assessments at both the classroom and state levels. The portfolio resources bibliography lists 234 publications to assist educators who are experimenting with portfolio assessment, including theoretical articles and actual samples of portfolio systems. All grade levels are covered, as are many subject areas.

This bibliography includes information on 146 articles, monographs, and other documents useful to educators looking for alternative ways to assess students’ performance in science. Readers will find definitions for terms in the bibliography such as open ended, holistic rubric, analytical-trait rubrics, task-specific rubric, and generalized rubrics.

The 45 entries in this assessment bibliography include a variety of applications and topics: diploma examinations, portfolios, grade-level tests, discussions of issues, performance assessments, curriculum frameworks and sample exercises, project fair materials, scoring guides, performance tasks, the "ordered-tree technique," instructional goals, open-response questions, definitions of terms, and results of research studies.

Toolkit98 is designed to assist classroom teachers to become better assessors of student learning. The primary users of Toolkit98 are intended to be those who have the responsibility to coordinate and facilitate professional development in assessment for teachers.
