Idaho Superintendents Network: In Praise of American Educators

adult students

In Rick DuFour’s book, In Praise of American Educators and How They Can Become Even Better, DuFour articulates the perceived attack on American Educators. And yet the push for higher academic standards, more rigorous evaluation methods (of both teachers and students) and mandated reforms have not resulted in higher student outcomes. DuFour’s recommendation is to use the collective knowledge of educators in a way that is focused and collaborative through professional learning communities.

In this session we will provide a copy of the book to each participant and focus particular attention to the topics in chapter 11, "The Principal as Leader Learner." Leadership is second only to teaching among school-related factors that impact student achievement. Just as other areas of education have changed, so too has the role of the principal. Principals play a critical role that can support or inhibit both student and adult learning. This session will focus on two specific areas. The first is providing feedback and establishing two-way communications between the district and school. The second is to discuss collaborative leadership at both the district and school level.
