A study published in June 2012 evaluated five middle schools in western Washington to answer the question, “How can we help middle school students whose reading skills are two or more years below grade level?”

The Washington Striving Readers Year 1 Evaluation Report, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, ended two years earlier than planned due to budget cuts by Congress. Still, the Education Northwest evaluation team gained valuable information from the study, including the lesson that it is possible to make a statistically significant difference in the reading achievement of struggling readers in a single year.
