"Supporting Newcomer English Language Learners in Secondary Schools"
June 12, 2105
Presenter: Mary Martinez-Wenzl, Education Northwest
Newcomer English language learners (ELLs) in high school are a diverse group and are often difficult to serve. Some arrive in the United States with good educational backgrounds from their home countries, but with no knowledge of the English language or of American history and culture. Others are refugees who arrive in the United States with interrupted educations and psychological trauma. This workshop will focus on the policies, programs, and practices that have the most promise for ensuring newcomers access the academic content and language necessary to succeed in high school and beyond.

Evaluating Together: Lessons Learned from a District English Learner Program Review
June 28, 2014
Presenters: Jason Greenberg Motamedi & Claudia Rodríguez-Mojica, Education Northwest; Linda Friberg, Evergreen School District
This workshop will discuss the successes and challenges faced by district staff members and evaluators during a recent district-wide English learner program review, and highlight the lessons we learned during the process. Specifically, we will describe how evaluators and district and school staff members created a partnership based on a clear purpose: to identify the strengths and needs of the district’s current instruction and support for English learners. We will then share the tools we used to achieve these goals. We will also discuss the process by which the partners worked together to turn evaluation findings into practical and actionable recommendations.
