Rubrics (Scoring Guides) for 6+1 Trait® Writing

The Rubric is the Core of the Model

The core of the 6+1 Trait® assessment model is the rubric. We offer two numbered sets of rubrics, a 5-Point and a 6-Point set. A 5-Point set for K-2 and 3-12, and a 6-Point set for K-2 and 3-12. Both sets are field tested, research-based and teacher friendly. The choice is up to you.

The Beginning Writers’ Rubrics, whether 5 or 6-point, were created to support teachers and students as they are starting to write, beginning to build writing process classrooms, learning and building a common vocabulary and establishing a vision for good writing, while still developing the skills necessary to write. The 3-12 upper level rubrics, whether 5 or 6-point, are generally used with late second or third graders on up through higher level education.

Reflecting Upon Rubrics

By stepping back and reflecting upon how writing includes thinking, listening, reading, planning, speaking, and drawing, we can see all sorts of possibilities for using the trait language with our youngest learners. We teach our children and ourselves what rubrics are and how to use them in many aspects of their learning and our teaching. If we focus on the language of writing, the common language, then together, K-12, students and teachers alike will come to truly understand the skills required to become a strong writer while working through the process of writing.
