How to Use the Traits

elementary student at desk

How do you use the traits to help improve writing? To help answer this question we've compiled a set of getting started "words of wisdom."

We've also compiled a set of lesson plans for the classroom. Many were created by classroom teachers and submitted to us explicitly to share.

Not all writing prompts are created equal. Using the right prompts also helps improve writing by helping writers spark a personal connection with their subject. We provide the right prompts with various modes of writing to make sure they are properly paired.

Upcoming Traits Events

  • Education Northwest’s 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment is a powerful framework designed to help all teachers and students use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing, as well as create a common vision of what quality writing looks like.

  • This advanced institute is for trait-experienced literacy coaches, teacher leaders, administrators, and curriculum coordinators wishing to conduct their own in-district, 6+1 Trait trainings. Participants should have already taken a 6+1 Trait Writing workshop and have used the 6+1 Trait Writing model in the classroom.
