Centering Native Culture for Strength, Healing, and Student Success

At Hays Lodgepole School on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, principal Reyna Monteau is leading a holistic effort to weave Assiniboine and Gros Ventre culture into the school curricula and learning environments. Monteau, who grew up on the reservation, knows firsthand the importance of connecting students’ learning to their community, heritage, and culture. By centering the knowledge of elders, Monteau and other school leaders have made buffalo hunts, pipe ceremonies, language revitalization, and traditional knowledge and skills a standard part of the school day.
Consultation
We offer literacy expertise across the spectrum, from early literacy to postsecondary and from English learners to special education students and children with dyslexia. We offer training and technical assistance specifically designed for educators and educational leaders to build the strengths and literacy of all students.
Leadership Development
We partner with educators to find solutions to their unique literacy needs that includes supporting students with disabilities. Drawing from a wide range of evidence-backed strategies that match specific learning environments, we collaborate with our clients to identify the content and delivery methods that best meet their needs.
Program Evaluation
We provide data and analysis to help our clients assess their literacy efforts. We work closely with leaders to create customized evaluations in areas ranging from early literacy to adolescent reading. We also have deep experience with literacy research and have served literacy policy consultants to lawmakers and school leaders.

REL Northwest
Regional Educational Laboratory Northwest is one of 10 regional educational laboratories across the nation dedicated to improving the use of research and data in policy and classroom practice. REL Northwest is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.
Region 17 Comprehensive Center
The Region 17 CC at Education Northwest is part of a national network of 19 CCs funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The network’s goal is to provide high-impact training and technical services to education leaders across the country.
