Dr. Barclay Burns Named Chief Executive Officer of Education Northwest

December 21, 2018

Education Northwest’s board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Barclay Burns as CEO and President.

Burns will succeed Steve Fleischman, who is retiring after six years as CEO and President of organization.

A professor of entrepreneurship and strategy at the University of Utah, Burns founded and served as President of Portland-based Learning.com. He has a doctorate in instructional psychology from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in strategic management from Cambridge University. Burns began his professional career as a high school teacher in Orem, Utah.

Throughout his career, Burns has focused on improving student outcomes and closing the achievement gap with the help of technology and online learning.

Most recently, he helped launch a living and learning center at the University of Utah that focuses on equity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

Burns’ academic research focuses on strategic philanthropy and partnerships between nonprofit and for-profit organizations.

“The board is excited to welcome Barclay to Education Northwest,” says Patty Wood, chairperson of Education Northwest’s board of directors. “His focus on our mission, our work, and equity, combined with his experience in growing businesses, makes him a great fit for the organization. Ultimately, our work is about our mission—meeting the needs of students, schools, and communities—and we believe he will continue to build on this solid foundation.”

“I am really excited about this opportunity and to continue building on the great work this organization has been doing for over 50 years,” Burns says. “I believe in its mission and its capacity to continue its dynamic growth in improving student learning and schools in the Northwest and beyond.”

Burns will begin his work at Education Northwest on January 22, 2019.
