Education leaders from the Knowledge Alliance welcomed the appointment of Ruth Curran Neild to lead the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) at the U.S. Department of Education. Neild previously served as commissioner of the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance at IES. Knowledge Alliance praised Neild for her leadership in making IES’s research relevant to educators and policymakers.
“Ruth has proven herself to be a national leader in efforts to better connect research, policy, and practice in education,” said Knowledge Alliance President Michele McLaughlin. “Now, more than ever, policymakers and educators need and demand reliable and relevant evidence to help improve education systems at the local, state, and national levels. In her prior positions at IES, Ruth has demonstrated an ability to champion both rigor and relevance in education research. We look forward to working with her in this new position.”
“This appointment continues to move IES forward in its efforts to provide educators the evidence they need to help kids succeed,” said Steve Fleischman, chairperson of the Knowledge Alliance board of directors and chief executive officer of Education Northwest. “Ruth has demonstrated a commitment to improving the quality and relevance of research and technical assistance activities, including the Regional Educational Laboratories, ERIC, and the What Works Clearinghouse.” Fleischman added that this appointment ensures strong leadership at IES to meet its mission of providing rigorous and relevant evidence and widely disseminating it in order to inform education practice and policy.
