Preparing students for the Common Core State Standards in writing
Teachers nationwide are working to ensure effective implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These standards outline rigorous expectations for students’ writing abilities in both the K–12 English Language Arts Standards and the Grades 6–12 Standards for Literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. This means that teachers in all subject areas will be held responsible for increasing students’ writing proficiency. Our instructors are here to help.
This [institute] has been a huge help because what is being asked of us across our whole district is to organize our instruction around the CCSS. I love the traits. I love what it does for writers—for kids. Understanding how they are aligned solidifies for me that this is the direction we need to go.
—Julie Peters, high school teacher and English department coordinator, Meade, WA
Come to the City of Roses for a powerful learning experience that will prepare you for the rigors of the CCSS
In the heart of downtown Portland, our Institutes take place in a supportive environment where teachers learn to communicate more effectively with students about the elements of quality writing. In addition to learning to evaluate student writing across all seven traits, participants will get help creating detailed, grade-specific, trait-writing instruction that aligns with the CCSS. They’ll also enjoy the support and insights of fellow participants as they explore proven teaching practices and classroom-tested resources.
Implementing the traits will help with CCSS because it provides a unilateral language that we can use in all of the classrooms and throughout the curriculum.
—Robert Chambers, middle/high school principal, Arco, ID
